Cai Isfryn

Born in Bangor, North Wales, Cai is currently in his 3rd year at the Royal Northern College of Music studying trumpet with Rhys Owens (Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra). He began playing with Seindorf Beaumaris Brass Band in Wales, and remained with them until the age of 18, during which time he won numerous soloist prizes including the National Eisteddfod of Wales and Gregynog Young Musician of the Year.  A former principal of the National Youth Brass Band of Wales and the National Youth Wind Band of Wales as well as a member of the National Youth Orchestra and Jazz Band, he was also a member and a soloist with the European Youth Brass Band in 2005, playing assistant principal.

He moved to Fodens Band, and during his period with them, won the International Masters and North West Area whilst studying under Roger Webster. A year later Cai joined Black Dyke band on Solo Cornet and so far, during his time with Dyke, they have won the Yorkshire Area and the National Finals.  Cai has also made a guest appearance with the victorious Eikanger Band during the Norwegian National Finals.

Whilst at Black Dyke, Cai first took interest in composition and received lessons from both Philip Wilby and Peter Meechan.  As a new composer on the brass band scene, he is fortunate to have had some of the best brass bands in the world such as Black Dyke, Cory and Willebroek perform his compositions.  His previous composing experience has revolved around the world of popular music, with songs of his being broadcast on 'BBC Radio Cymru' and being recorded in the 'Sain' recording studios.  Those who have influenced his work vary greatly, from Strauss and Sibelius to Arturo Sandoval and Queen, and he hopes to continue composing for brass band whilst progressing with his playing career.
