Introduction, Theme and Variations
Introduction, Theme and Variations for Clarinet and Orchestra was composed in 1808 when the composer was only eighteen. It was written, in all probability, for the fabulous Milan virtuoso Ernesto Cavallini.
Beginning with chords reminiscent of the opening of the Barber of Seville Overture, the Introduction is lyrical in nature. The Theme itself is jaunty in character and leads onto a set of variations. Apart from the tender penultimate variation, each becomes increasingly more demanding, with the piece ending in a virtuosic display from the soloist.
The soloist part of this piece has been edited for performance by euphonium by David Childs, with the brass band accompaniment provided by Christian Jenkins. This arrangement was first performed by David Childs, accompanied by the Buy As You View Band at the Regent Hall Brass Arts Festival Gala Concert on Friday 15th October 2004.
