Three Pieces
These three pieces were originally composed for ‘cello and piano, based on improvisations on a DX7 (which will indicate how long ago that was!). I recently reconceived them for euphonium, impressed by the ability the instrument has to be both punchy and mellow. The pieces are all linked thematically, and make most sense played as a set. The 7/8 metre of the first piece combines with the dissonant intervals to create an edgy feeling, which contrasts with the rhapsodic and highly expressive nature of the central slow piece. The last movement is ostinato-based though gentle; the near-quote from ‘Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head’ brings back memories of the English Lake District, where much of this was composed.
